Emlen Elementary School and members of the Mt. Airy Schools Coalition seek to raise $48,807 to purchase 33 new iMacs ($1,479 each) for the computer lab. These funds would have a transformative impact on Emlen’s technology program. For the first time Mrs. Costello would be able to fully implement the District’s technology curriculum, which is not possible with the lab’s current equipment. Students would benefit from engaging, technology-infused lessons, such as: creating book trailers in iMovie, building reading fluency through podcasting, or publishing their writing. In a recent survey, Emlen’s teachers indicated that technology upgrades are their top fundraising priority.
This project would also give every student access to a functioning computer, making it possible to use programs like First in Math and Lexia that tailor instruction to each student’s needs and skill level. Students would also be able to use the myriad of instructional software programs and websites that require Flash. Current lab computers that are still functional would be redeployed into classrooms, the future library, and/or into the Head Start classrooms.
Computer specifications and pricing are based on the School District of Philadelphia’s purchasing agreements. The District has agreed to handle installation and maintenance, if the school community successfully raises funds to purchase the equipment.
